One Flame Changes the Room
There are moments in life that seem ordinary… until suddenly they aren’t.
Tonight, my children and I were sitting together watching a movie when the power went out. Instantly, the room went dark. We laughed, grabbed my daughter’s iPad, and continued the movie. The glow from the screen was enough that I didn’t even think about needing more light.
But after a little while, I noticed a candle nearby and decided to light it.
And honestly… it stunned me.
One tiny flame illuminated far more of the room than I expected. What had felt dark moments before suddenly felt softer. Warmer. Safer. Peaceful. One small flame changed the entire atmosphere.
And immediately, I thought about how much this mirrors life.
Darkness always feels bigger when we’re standing in the middle of it. Fear. Hurt. Grief. Loneliness. Anxiety. Division. Hopelessness. It can feel consuming, as though darkness is swallowing everything around us.
But darkness has one major weakness:
It cannot exist where light is present.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.” And long before those words were spoken, Scripture reminded us of the very same truth:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5
So often, we convince ourselves that what we have to offer is too small to matter.
One encouraging text. One prayer. One act of kindness. One conversation. One smile. One person choosing forgiveness. One person choosing hope. One person choosing to love anyway.
We think, What difference can one small light possibly make in a world this dark?
But a candle never has to argue with darkness to change a room. It simply has to burn.
That tiny flame tonight reminded me that you never truly know how far your light reaches. You may feel insignificant. You may feel unnoticed. You may feel like what you carry isn’t enough to impact anyone around you.
But it is.
Because light was never meant to compete for attention. Its very presence changes things.
Maybe God never asked us to light the whole world at once. Maybe He simply asked us to keep our flame lit so others can find their way through the dark.
And maybe the beautiful thing is this:
One flame often inspires another.
Before long, an entire room once covered in darkness can become filled with light.
So if you’re in a season where you feel small, unseen, or uncertain of your purpose… remember the candle.
One spark changed the atmosphere of the whole room.
And so can you.
With hope and light, — Naureen
