Some Days Just Feel Heavy
I am generally a positive person.
It takes a lot to shake me. A lot to steal my joy. A lot to make me want to wave the white flag.
But today…
Today feels heavy.
Not because one catastrophic thing happened. It’s the accumulation. The hit after hit. The weight of a hundred little things piling on until you wonder how much one person is supposed to carry.
Today feels like one of those days where you want to crawl back into bed, pull the covers over your head, shut the world out, and hope tomorrow comes quickly.
And if I’m being completely honest…
Today is one of those days where I’ve asked God, “What am I doing wrong?”
Not because I think He owes me an easy life.
But because sometimes you genuinely try.
You try to love people well.
You try to forgive.
You spend time with Him.
You try to honor Him with your words, your decisions, your work, your relationships.
You try to become more like Jesus.
And then life still knocks the wind out of you.
It can leave you wondering if anything you’re doing even matters.
Then comes the guilt.
Because I know how blessed I am.
My children are healthy.
I have food on my table.
I have a home.
I have friends who love me.
God has provided for me in more ways than I deserve.
So why does my heart still feel so heavy?
Maybe you’ve asked yourself that too.
I think sometimes we’ve convinced ourselves that gratitude and grief can’t exist together.
That if we’re blessed, we shouldn’t feel overwhelmed.
That if we trust God, we shouldn’t have bad days.
But Scripture tells a different story.
David praised God and poured out his despair.
Elijah performed incredible miracles, then later sat under a tree asking God to let him die (1 Kings 19).
Job worshipped, questioned, cried, and kept coming back to God.
Faith doesn’t mean we never feel crushed.
Faith means we keep bringing our crushed hearts to the One who can hold them.
Psalm 34:18 says,
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
Notice it doesn’t say He is close only when we’re strong.
He’s close when we’re crushed.
So today…
I’m not writing this because I have a neat ending.
I don’t have three easy steps to feeling better.
I don’t have some incredible revelation that suddenly made today wonderful.
Today simply feels heavy.
And maybe that’s enough to admit.
Because pretending everything is okay doesn’t strengthen our faith.
Bringing our honest hearts before God does.
Tomorrow may be different.
The circumstances may not change overnight, but my perspective probably will.
God has carried me through too much for me to believe this feeling will last forever.
But today…
Today I’m just breathing.
Today I’m choosing to believe that God is still good, even when life doesn’t feel good.
And maybe that’s what faith actually looks like.
Not pretending the storm isn’t real.
But trusting that Jesus is still in the boat.
