The God of the Little Winks

Lately, I’ve been trying to get better at talking with God throughout the day.

Not just the sit-down prayers before meals. Not just the prayers I pray when life feels hard and I need direction. I mean the ongoing conversations. The kind where you talk to Him like a friend. The kind where you thank Him when things are going well instead of only reaching for Him when they aren’t.

Scripture tells us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). For a long time, I thought that sounded impossible. How can anyone pray all day long?

But I don’t think Paul was telling us to spend every waking moment with our heads bowed and our eyes closed. I think he was talking about living in constant conversation with God. Inviting Him into the ordinary moments of our day.

So recently, as I was driving, I offered up a simple prayer.

“Lord, reveal Yourself to me today. Just a little reminder that You’re here. A wink. A high five. Something.”

Nothing dramatic. Nothing earth-shattering.

Just a simple request from a daughter who wanted to feel close to her Father.

Later that day, I was driving and doing what I often do—thinking, processing, and daydreaming. A new Mumford & Sons song came on. I immediately liked it. The melody caught my attention, and so did the lyrics.

It was a bit of a romance song, which honestly made me laugh because that’s not exactly where my life is at the moment. Apparently Mumford & Sons and God were having a different conversation than I was.

But then I glanced down at my car screen and saw the title.

“Clover.”

I smiled immediately.

Now, if you’ve read my book, you probably understand why that stopped me in my tracks.

If you haven’t, you’re probably wondering why a song title about a plant would mean anything at all.

Years ago, God used a Mumford & Sons album and a patch of clovers to get my attention in a way I couldn’t ignore. It became one of those deeply personal moments in my faith journey—one of those markers where I knew God was pursuing my heart.

So when I saw the title of that song, it felt like a familiar whisper.

A reminder.

A wink.

The same band God used to get my attention years ago had released a new song called “Clover” in the very year my book was released—the book that tells the story of how He used those clovers in the first place.

Coincidence?

Maybe some would say so.

But I’ve learned that relationship with God changes the way you see things.

Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).

I’ve come to believe that God often speaks in ways that are deeply personal. Not because He has to, but because He wants to. Because He knows us. Because He loves us.

Sometimes He speaks through Scripture.

Sometimes through worship.

Sometimes through wise counsel.

And sometimes through a song title that appears at exactly the right moment.

Not every sign is a message from God. Not every coincidence is divine intervention. But every now and then, there are moments that feel so personal, so specific, and so perfectly timed that they remind us He is closer than we think.

I asked God to reveal Himself that day.

I wasn’t looking for fireworks.

I got a clover.

And somehow, that was even better.

Maybe today you need a reminder too.

Not that God is obligated to prove Himself to us, but that He delights in relationship with us. He is not distant. He is not absent. He is not waiting until you have everything figured out before He draws near.

Perhaps if you slow down long enough to listen, you’ll notice the little winks He’s been sending your way all along.

The sunset that stopped you in your tracks.

The song that played at the perfect moment.

The verse that seemed written specifically for your situation.

The unexpected encouragement from a friend.

Maybe God still speaks in the ordinary.

Maybe we’re just moving too fast to notice.

“Pray without ceasing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Slow down today. Watch for the winks.

With faith,

Naureen
